Tagging Extension Available

Tagging Extension is available to try out now. Download here.

It uses textbox<->button interaction I’ve been working on and also some of the Places API.

A couple of things to get this set up and working.

* Extension was tested on the Alpha 5 release.

* Setting up the extension

1. Install the xpi file.

2. (After restarting) Right click on toolbar and then “customize”.

3. Find the tagging icon (titled as “Tagging UI Prototype 1″) and drag it to the toolbar.

If you get to try this out, any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

right after installation:

the Icon is too large - or, there is no variant for “use small icons” included?

I am aware of the size difference, but was focusing on other parts of the extension more this time. The icon size will be fixed in the next version.

If you type a space before the tag name it will remove the first letter when it “converts” to a button. (sorry if thats not clear)

Are you going to be styling the tags like the mock ups? I thought they looked very good and I shouldn’t think it would be too hard with -moz-border-radius. (which is now anti-aliased, woot!)

I think the buttons “All Tabs” and “Close All Tabs” are pretty confusing. This should probably be a twisty-toggle with the label “previously used tags” or something…

Shouldn’t “return” or “enter” dismiss the dialog? In other words “OK” should be the default button

Hi, looks nice. But it is just for tagging so far right? I can’t do anything with them yet other than have added tags available for tagging other pages.

A problem I’ve encountered is the tag menu appears far from the tag button. It seems to happen after right-clicking the toolbar and not sure how it fixes itself at some point.

Yup this is currently just for tagging. But hopefully this can lead to other relevant things like searching for pages by tags and whatnot in the future.

Looking good. A few suggestions though:

I don’t really like the way the popup menu is positioned arbitrarily in the window, it seems unrelated to the location of the tag button. Maybe I’m just being daft or perhaps I’m seeing a bug I don’t know.

On that note, can’t we just have a single-click action? I would much rather have something happen (tagging dialog appears) immediately when I push the tag button - I don’t see any reason to fiddle with the menu. You could make another button for the menu functionality or make it a drop-down menu button in the same fashion as the the Firefox back and forward buttons: the arrow next to the button provides a menu but a click on the button gives instant results.

I wonder the different ways you think of, so people can query back the items they tagged. And also what are your thoughts related to social aspect of tagging / social places.

Hello. Your welcome to demo and/or mention the extension in your presentation. It’s far from perfect, but hopefully it has what you are looking for.

Regarding search, I like the idea of having everything in one place. So, whether it be searching by tags, title of the website, url, date, or any other criteria, I would find it natural to do it all through one interface.
I like to be able to use those search terms in the location bar to search through bookmarks & history. Having a Quicksilver-like feature to search through anything in your browser would be really cool too I think.

Regarding the social aspect of tagging, I think it can provide a more personal review/information on things. Through other people tagging, you can see what other people think and possibly get a different view on the same thing. Tagging can obviously help you find things that are related to your interest also. Stumble! and del.icio.us do a great job with that.

I wasn’t used to such questions, but I hope my thoughts were helpful.
